Awesome Mossel Bay

What to expect when you live in the Mossel Bay area.

Not just a fishing village

Mossel Bay is a harbor city of about 130,000 people on the Southern Cape (or Garden Route) of South Africa. It is in an important tourism and farming region of the Western Cape Province. Mossel Bay lies 400 kilometers east of the country’s seat of parliament, Cape Town (which is also the capital city of the Western Cape Province), and 400 km west of Port Elizabeth, the largest city in the Eastern Cape Province. The older parts of the city occupy the north-facing side of the Cape St Blaize Peninsula, whilst the newer suburbs straddle the Peninsula and have spread eastwards along the sandy shore of the Bay.
The city’s economy relied heavily on farming, fishing and its commercial harbor (the smallest in the Transnet Port Authority’s stable of South African commercial harbors) until the 1969 discovery of natural offshore gas fields led to the development of the gas-to-liquids refinery operated by PetroSATourism is another driver of Mossel Bay’s economy.

Every day a sunny one

Notably too, in terms of its climate, Mossel Bay enjoys the second most moderate climate in the world. Yes, the world – it’s recorded as having more than 300 sunny days per year. I have fond memories of our time spent in and around Mossel Bay, and it felt like we were on holiday all year round. It’s no surprise then that Mossel Bay is a firm favorite for tourists. With the little town seeing an influx of eager visitors during both off and on-season holiday periods.

Best run municipality in South Africa

It’s no surprise that Mossel Bay is in such high demand, for tourists, visitors, and property hunters alike. The Good Governance Africa (GGA) Index recently rated Mossel Bay as the best-run municipality in South Africa. Buoyed by an uptick in property values and a keen interest in property sales within the Mossel Bay area, property in Mossel Bay is a hot ticket if you’re selling your home.

Sweet Mossel Bay memories

Having spent some time in Mossel Bay as a child. I can guarantee this when you opt to move into the area: clean, fresh air (my brother’s allergies all but disappeared during our time there), a lifestyle where everyone knows everyone, and you’re never too far from home to walk.

Mossel Bay magic

The Good Governance Africa (GGA) Index ranking is nothing to sniff at, and it’s not easy to win a first place amongst these rankings. The Good Governance Africa Index ranks municipalities in terms of their service delivery, administration, and indicators for economic development. With Mossel Bay coming out on top across South Africa, living in Mossel Bay might just be your suburban dream come true.

Historical sites in Mossel Bay

For sightseeing and wannabe historians, Mossel Bay offers a wide variety of options, do discover and explore. When visiting Mossel Bay, we recommend you pop in to:
  • The Bartholomew Dias Museum Complex: The Bartolomeu Dias museum complex was officially opened on 3 February 1989, however, the Mossel Bay museum industry can be traced back to the 1960s when the Mossel Bay museum was first opened. The museum later became known as the Post Tree museum complex before being renamed again in 1989. The Dias Museum Complex is situated near the beach, shops, restaurants, banks, and the tourist information center. Inside the Maritime Museum is a shop where postcards, stamps, books, souvenirs, and small gifts can be bought. On the grounds of the Dias Museum Complex are mountain tortoises, ducks, and museum cat. In the Granary there are conference facilities available for 48 people or if used in cinema style, seating for up to 100 people. Catering can be arranged. Mail from the shoe is collected twice a day (once a day out of season) by the Post Office. Whales can be observed from the museum grounds during June to November.
  • The Post Office Tree: In 1501 Pedro d’Ataida left a letter in a sailor’s boot in a tree near the spring warning that Calicut had been taken by the Borneans, so that Portuguese were no longer safe. Admiral Jao da Nova arrived with seven ships carrying the replacements for the Calicut garrison and found the letter. (The garrison was rotated every three years), He decided to divert to Malakat where the garrison was only one year into its stint. On the way back he built a small chapel to thank the Virgin Mary for the warning that had saved his troops. Henceforth, letters were regularly left in the shoe to avoid destruction by the Khoi who believed that any form of writing was magic to be used against them.
  • Dias’ Landing: Bartolomeu Dias discovered that he had sailed past the southern-most point of Africa. A strong wind had driven him so far south of Cape Point that he did not see it and had to sail northwards to reach the coast. His first landing place was the bay of St. Blaize (SÁƒÂƒ£o Bras), now Mossel Bay. Here he took in freshwater and bartered live-stock from the Khoikhoi. Due probably to a lack of understanding, a crossbow was fired killing one of the Khoi. The Post Office Tree, where seafarers from centuries ago posted letters home using a cleft in an ancient tree as a postbox signifies that ships called regularly at the bay for watering and other purposes.
  • Maritime Museum: The building was originally erected in 1901 to serve as a grain and sawmill. It has now been adapted to serve as a unique Maritime Museum. A life-sized replica of Bartolomeu Dias’s caravel is on display together with all aspects of the maritime history of the early Portuguese, Dutch and English navigators. Bartolomeu Dias – the master mariner after which the Mossel Bay Museum Complex is named, was the first explorer to set foot on South African soil here in Mossel Bay on 3 February 1488. He named Mossel Bay “The Watering Place of Saint Blaize” after arriving here on the holy day of the patron Saint Blaize and collecting fresh water from the fountain which today still flows. In the foyer, a ceramic mural of blue and white Portuguese tiles can be seen. This magnificent piece of art was created by the Portuguese artist, Gilberto, and depicts the mythical figure of Adamastor. The poet Luis Vasda Cameos was inspired by Vasco da Gama’s 1497 encounters with the terrifying storms that surround the Cape of Storms and created this tale of the sea spirit. The poem features Adamastor who was expelled from Olympus for his rebellion against the Gods. His punishment was to be transformed into a rugged mountain at the southern tip of Africa. It was here that he would guard the seas, send out storms to punish the continuous free movement of the Portuguese. It later became a superstition amongst the sailors that bad luck would befall those that saw Adamastor.

The Point a dramatic rocky point that is at the tip of the peninsula within central Mossel Bay. Rows of rocky reefs form a natural tidal pool known as Die Poort. For generations, the town’s children have learned to swim in this pool where chains and ropes have been secured across the pool to assist swimmers when the surging tides cause strong currents to wash down the pool. At the upper end of the pool, there is a diving board over a deep pool with high rocks on the seaward side. This is Blougat (Blue Hole), a very deep pool, much deeper pool than the first, giving it a deep blue color and thus its name. Here you can stroll for 3 kilometers along a walkway across the rocky coastline or venture on the 15-kilometre-long St Blaize hiking trail to Dana Bay.
